AIS Solution for high accuracy labelling of medical device product

Our customer, a global medical device company which manufactures filters for particle monitoring, needed to streamline their labelling process across 4 production lines.

They were looking for a highly accurate labelling machine that would print and apply a clear circular label, 45mm in diameter, to the top of a plastic enclosure.

Labels are printed on demand using a built in Thermal Transfer printer. Label formats are a combination of fixed template information, which are stored on the HMI, and variable fields (lot number, expiry etc), which are drawn down, in real-time, from the ERP. Label formats are called up by the operator who scans a barcode on a work order, this code calls a specific template from the HMI of the printer and the HMI software then draws the variable data fields from the ERP.

The product accumulates on the infeed conveyor. Once ready the product is released one by one and passes under the Herma 414 labelling head, a gripper would momentarily stop and hold the product and the label would be applied from the top with an accuracy of +-.05mm, once applied and product would be released and the machine would be ready for the next product.

The Solution
The AIS Sales and Project Engineers spent numerous months discussing suitable solutions in conjunction with the customer's Senior Manufacturing Engineers. After a long tendering process, AIS was chosen for the job due to their many years experience in the automatic labelling industry.

The solution comprised of the Herma 414 labelling machine along with the Videojet TTO printer.

The Herma 414 with moving beak gives the highest labelling accuracy possible in today's market, and the Videojet 6430 TTO has established itself as the tried and tested printer in the manufacturing environment.

The project covered three stationary machines integrated into the production line and the 4th machine was made mobile so it could be used anywhere in the factory.
